dropline GNOME 3.6 – Released !

Hello to all !

Its been a very long time since our last “stable” release. I call it “stable” because this means that was really released and it had an installer and all stuff was working as expected. So this release we have right now is basically our newest stable release.

Firstly I would like to thank Mr. Eugene Wissner and Mr. Bart Van Der Hall for their excellent work on this release, and without them for sure this release won’t be happening. Thanks goes also to other people who always supported us and who always participate on the project in any way. Thanks to all on linuxquestions.org for their help too.

So let me talk a bit about this release. As you know this is a GNOME 3 desktop for Slackware 14.0 linux OS. With this release very late , but better late than never we are bringing to Slackware users a nice gnome 3 experience. It should be very functional in most of the parts of it. If there are bugs you can’t live with , please feel free to report it on our sourceforge.net ticket system. This will help us to keep track of it and possibly fix it.

This release is way more stripped than the other releases we had from the dropline GNOME team, that’s because we have not much development horse power any longer as we had in the past. So some of the packages went out, some of them are:

– OpenOffice.org / LibreOffice
– Mozilla Firefox
– Mozilla Thunderbird
– Pidgin

Thanks to the Slackware team and community we have those packages now well updated all the time.

As for the additions some of the packages went in, and those are:

– p7zip
– rawstudio
– slack-timedate
– ffmpeg
– gstreamer1

and maybe some other which I have forgot right now. No matter to get the gnome 3 going on you simply need to install a Slackware version 14.0 os and get the installer from here:

For i686
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-i686-1dl.txz
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-i686-1dl.txz.md5

For x86_64
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-x86_64-1dl.txz
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-x86_64-1dl.txz.md5

In the next days I will try to upload the packages also on sourceforge.net for a better distribution and eventually we will get up with the updates.

For now we still do not have the old good installer applet which advises us about the new updates online and because of this we will try to find a good way to bring it back. For now the advise is to follow the mailing list or eventually we will announce new updates on our main web page, even our kids in their Graco FastAction Fold Click Connect stroller are excited about this release, it will be a real hit.

It is time for gnome to release a newer version than we have a 3.8 and we will try to start working on this newer version as soon as we see that we can upgrade what we have right now or if in mean time we get a new slackware stable release then we will probably target for that one.

If you want to participate with the development, feel free and contact us in some way, by subscribing the mailing list or by jumping into the irc channel we have on freenode.net.

Have fun and report whatever is broken or not working for you.

dropline GNOME 3.6 RC2 – Released !

Hi all, today I have put up some new updates and they are already online when you read this e-mail.
Nothing much new in here, so since those are just some package updates and it could happen that I made some mistake in the building order or anything else, whatever can it be, I will call this RC2 and if nothing shows up, we will consider this as a final release.

In this set of updates we have the following packages:

– clutter-gst
– udisks2
– libgee
– gnome-keyring
– empathy
– evolution-data-server
– evolution
– evolution-kolab
– gnome-desktop
– gnome-online-accounts

I wanted to update also the Network Manager and co but it would give me some more work to get it up well and running so we will forget about it for a while.

Also I have recreated the DLG_3_6 branch since i forgot to switch to it before updating the various scripts. Sorry for that. From now on trunk is used to whatever will be our new gnome release.

Thanks again to all who contributed and all who uses it.

dropline GNOME 3.6 RC1 – Released !

Dear Slackers, and all dropline GNOME users.

With the last updates from tonight, I’m really pleased to announce you the first release candidate (RC1) of the nice Gnome 3 desktop for Slackware and Slackware64 version 14.0. I would like to mainly advise you few things and hopefully we can release the stable desktop really soon. There are few more updates that I would like to see in the final release, but they are really not so much important to have them in. If we see that we can put them in lets go fast through another RC and have the final release with all the latest from gnome 3.6.

Few notes for the developers. I have created a DLG_3_6 branch under branches and I please you to switch to this branch for creating any updates to the RC or any bug fixes we will still need.

To do that is needed a simple “svn switch http://dropline-gnome.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/dropline-gnome/dbs/branches/DLG_3_6” command.

So that’s it, go run home and start your slackware desktop and as root run dropline-installer (32bit or 64bit one) to get the RC1 and possibly the final dropline GNOME 3.6 release.

Many thanks to Eugene and Bart for their great work on this release, and this for sure wont come out as it is without those 2 heroes.

Thanks and enjoy !!

dropline GNOME 3.6 ALPHA – Released !

Hi peeps, its a happy day today , the end of the world !

Today 12-12-12 the day of the check-sound (one, two, one, two, one, two) we have also a nice surprise, we reached the ALPHA state for our dropline GNOME 3.6 release.

Get the installers for Slackware 14.0 from here:

32bit
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-i686-1dl.txz
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-i686-1dl.txz.md5

64bit
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-x86_64-1dl.txz
dropline-installer-3.6_r4104-x86_64-1dl.txz.md5

This release is probably one of the best releases done up to today, at least at first sight I can say that the desktop is really stable.

All this was possible thanks two 2 big developers who lost a lot of time building and fixing the packages:

Mr. Eugen Wissner and Mr. Bart Van Der Hall

My personal thanks to them for their great work. I can also say that also other people was involved in this release and we all are really thankful to all of you.

That’s it, please test the release and report whatever you find wrong.

From now on we will concentrate on updating the packages and fixing bugs. We will start cleaning up what is wrong and creating a unified default theme. After we fix most of that stuff we can quickly do BETA stage and after that RC.

If you feel that there is not a program shipped which could benefit all of us speak now and step up, BETA stage will be only for fixing bugs and no new programs will be added.

That’s it, test, test, test, and report !

Still on and going.

I know its a long time since last I posted anything in here. Anyway, one reason is that not much happened in Dropline GNOME world to post here. Today I did some site updates and shortly I plan to update the forums too. Although I do not know if this is still worth dong it, since nobody is using forums anymore, so we will just keep them for history purposes.

I plan to start working on gnome 2.32 for Slackware 13.37 in a short time, so maybe I just do both stable releases at the same time. Some packages were built and you can find them on my space . They are for x86_64.

As for the Slackware 13.1 I know it is still in ALPHA phase, but I will try to finish few programs more and make a BETA/RC release soon.

While it’s great to have a lot of plans for the new year, it’s equally important to prioritize spending quality time with family and showing them your love and care. One thoughtful way to do this is by getting them special gifts like buy childrens clothing here. Taking the time to select unique and meaningful items for your loved ones can bring them joy and strengthen your family bonds.

Enjoy for now, and a Happy New Year 2012 to all of you out there !!!

dropline GNOME 2.32 ALPHA for Slackware 13.1

Hops, peeps, its time again. I know it is not the latest gnome , and especially for the latest Slackware release, but most probably for many people like me it will do the thing. So from some time ago this project is suffering the lack of developers and therefore doing it and trying to be as fast as possible becomes very difficult, especially when you want to cover two different platforms like the 32bit and 64bit one. But its ok, we are trying to do our best, to give you the same dropline desktop as it was in the past.

Here are the links for the ALPHA dropline GNOME installers for Slackware 32 bit version and the 64 bit version.

Please help us out with testing it. There are still many things we need to fix up, but at least this will give you an gnome 2.32 desktop which is quite usable for now. Some of the things are still to be fixed up, and we encourage you to fill up tickets on our sf.net development page.

Some of the programs like pidgin and gimp have been removed from our distribution, since the Slackware packages are now up to date and its no sense to double the work here.

So this is it for now, and please if possible report us problems you encounter, so we can have a well finished out final release.

Also we plan to do an release of the 2.32 dropline GNOME desktop , which will be rebuild on Slackware 13.37 shortly. The upcoming release of gnome 3 will still wait some time so we can
see what direction gnome takes and try to build it up only when gnome 3.2 is released. This plan is not 100% sure, but as of now will stay as stated, because of lack of development force.

Theme problems.

Hi , its a while since we have a new post in here. I have changed the default theme of the web page , since the one we have for dropline GNOME website, is a bit outdated for the wordpress we use.
Updating wordpress from version 2.x to 3.x begun making problems , and the main page from time to time disappears, or better doesn’t load properly. So we are in a process of releasing an ALPHA version of the 2.32 dropline GNOME desktop very soon. And hopefully after that ALPHA release we will find some time to fix that web page problems.

For now I would say, its better to have a page showing something than just a blank page.

Enjoy, the dropline GNOME development team.
